Celebrate Armed Forces Day by learning more about the American Military. President Truman wanted to establish a cingle holiday for citizens to come together and thank the military. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced Armed Forces Day, a single day that unites all of our armed forces into one celebration and one department called the Department of Defense.
